Grand Central and Times Square

It's time to visit a couple iconic landmarks along the subway route. We are fast becoming experts on the NY Subway (BTW over here in the US that is NOT a sandwhich shop).

Our journey starts at Wall Street Station

(Yes we both look seriously jet lagged but it's 6:30 am (6:30pm Perth time) and we can't sleep, so what better use of our time than to venture around Manhattan Island via the NY subway....

Grand central station is our first stop....AND GRAND IT IS!!!!! These photos do not do justice to the gorgeous architecture, amazing wide open space, awesome ceiling design and chandeliers....yes I said chandeliers and yes what I meant was chandeliers!!!! I know! Who puts a chandelier in a railway station.....

This is one of at least 8 chandeliers I counted in the main hall.

Our American friends are fiercely patriotic....there are American flags (and they are really big) everywhere!!!!

Grand Central at 7am on a Saturday morning....visibly lonesome

Our next adventure was to take the "shuttle" to Times Square.

So...I imagined Times Square to be a really big open "mall-like" space, maybe covering a block or two and featuring carefully crafted landscaping with a huge fountain and a real cosmopolitan vibe...

....it was not what I imagined...this is it...it was tiny...yes this is Paul walking down the middle of it...

...and characterised by neon advertising....

...with it's very own NYPD...

....another very large and very neon flag....

...and some very unusual characters...

It was time for coffee and breakfast...thank goodness, one of the 287 Manhattan Starbucks was only a few metres away.

These two jet lagged Aussies definitely needed a decent shot of coffee...yes we doubled up :)

Til the next NY ADVENTURE

An evening in New York downtown

OAfter a much needed nap we ventured out into the twilight of downtown New York

We didn't go far before we found Paul's favourite food...Pizza! Welcome to the Blue Planet Brick Oven Pizza Bar.

We ordered two of the most delicious pizzas on this blue planet, and of course beer and wine...

Mmmmmmmmm, yum.

Then we strolled down Broadway

....and back to the hotel for more sleep....

Till tomorrow....

On our way to the USA

We left Perth airport with Singapore airlines

Stopped of at Changi Airport. We were amazed at the opulence and extent of this airport. We had to catch the sky train between terminals. Paul was mesmerised by the Rolex shop and I stopped to have a scribble with the kids...

Next stop was a brief layover at Frankfurt. Definitely not a Changi-style airport and security was the highest we had experienced so far.

We arrived at JFK Airport NY. Again, a huge airport with sky trains. We found it very easy to get around.

We decided to hit the NYC Subway to get to Manhattan....how hard could it be?
We asked Customs for directions (yeah i know not the best people to ask for directions!!!) and they suggested a quick 2 hour taxi ride to our destination, Wall Street Manhattan for about $50. We then asked at Information desk, and a disinterested woman suggested a shuttle for $28.74 each. $28.74??? Why such a weird figure? Who knows. Then Paul says, let's catch the subway we can get unlimited subway passes for $30 for the entire week. We had a conversation with a random stranger who knew exactly what line we needed to catch and the station we needed to get off. 40 mins later we arrived at chambers street station...

we arrived in downtown Manhattan!!! We were in NYC...

A quick 5 min walk to our hotel....

And it's nap time :)
We r NYC subway experts now lol :)
Good night
xx
